While there aren’t any motion controls to speak of, there are still some navigation tips I can give you.įirstly, think of moving your head as your main camera control. It’ll take some getting used to, but provided you’re patient, Subnautica is one of the most rewarding video game experiences to be had - especially in VR! Playing in VR This is a huge game full of complex lore and intricately woven systems. As you progress, you’ll uncover more about the history of this strange world - as well as its inhabitants. The game isn’t all about crafting and building, though. At some point, you’ll need to take root in the depths of the ocean and build a base beyond what your menial escape pod can offer you. Naturally, surviving in an alien world is about expansion. There are a couple of bare minimum materials you’ll find early on, and these allow you to craft the basic tools you’ll need to craft the better equipment. Subnautica follows the typical hierarchical supply tree of most survival games. Keeping a close eye on your food, water, health, and oxygen at all times is a must you’ll quickly learn that you can only explore the ocean for so long before needing to come back up for air or sustenance. To succeed in the game, you’ll need to master the concept of multitasking. You start off with very little in way of supplies: a small escape pod contains the bare minimum, and with your food and water meter already depleting rapidly at the start of the game, you’ll need to go hunting fast. Subnautica is a survival game, so that means plenty of crafting, foraging, mining, and base crafting. When it crash lands on Planet 4546B, our protagonist must adapt to life in this foreign world’s treacherous ocean. The game is set sometime in the late 22nd century when humans began colonising other solar systems, and our player character is a crew member aboard the Aurora - a spaceship sent out to complete an architectural project. The most unique aspect of Subnautica is its deep (DEEP) underwater setting. A Brief Overview of Subnautica Story and Setting Experiencing the huge scope of Subnautica’s underwater world is breathtaking, and even without any other defining VR features, the game is a must-play for anyone with an HMD. Instead, the game prioritizes the most important aspect: the visuals. Subnautica has a large focus on inventory management, building, and planning, and these aspects can be tiring if you need to physically use your arms. People were disappointed by this fact, but actually, I think the game is better for it. Motion controls are not currently supported, so you’ll use either a controller or your keyboard and mouse to play the game. ![]() What’s Different from the Flat Screen Version?įor our VR guides, we’d usually detail the ins and outs of controls and interaction using your own limbos but gameplay-wise, Subnautica’s VR mode is essentially the same as the flat-screen version. ![]() You’ll also find a host of tips and tricks I’ve found helpful in my many hours with the game, so be sure to come back and check those out once you’ve started playing. I’d also recommend taking the time to look over the modding section: some mods enable you to overcome the majority of the game’s mechanical shortcomings. If you’re rushing to get started, simply follow the quick guide below this section entitled “how to enable VR in Subnautica”. This guide covers the essentials you need to know for playing Subnautica in VR. The VR version of the game is a different beast, so in this guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know to take your Subnautica experience to the next level. It’s a dangerous, vast, and often overwhelming world, but that makes creating a liveable way of life there all the more enticing! I’ve put over 100 hours into the flat-screen version and added another 50 hours playing in VR, so much so that I may as well call 4546B my second home at this point.ĭespite the industry being awash with open-world games, there’s nothing quite like the solitary freedom of Subnautica. Given the vastness of Planet 4546B’s ocean world, it’s also as intensely beautiful as it is terrifying. It makes sense, then, that Subnautica’s VR mode makes the game more of a survival horror experience than ever before. Or perhaps it was your first anxious swim to the surface after going too deep which set your teeth on edge.

If you plant it on a Pair Pearadise, the first Molekale will transform everything, and then the second one will do it again, resulting in the first Molekale transformed into a plant that costs 5, and everything else into plants that cost 2 more. It is therefore possible to abuse this by playing and protecting 8-cost plants at all costs until you get to play Molekale, which will cheaply weaken all zombies. A similar strategy can be done with Cornucopia, although it is much more costly and may be less effective due to the fact that its ability can make plants that cost less than 4, lowering the effectiveness of Molekale's ability.Īlso, keep in mind that The Great Zucchini is the only 9 sun plant, and Cornucopia is the only 10 sun one, with none costing more. So we get by without radio, really, although it's wonderful to have the support if you can get it."Ĭlockwork Angels certainly got plenty of fan support. and yet it's got lots of play and is generating attention for the album. "Our expectation was probably wouldn't play it," Lifeson said, "and there was pressure to do a radio-edit version which came down to about five and a half minutes. "We've never done that, and this album was definitely no exception." Clockwork Angels' first single, "Headlong Flight," clocked in at an imposing seven and a half minutes. Lifeson said they were only too happy to do so and not concerned about who came along for the ride - particularly radio, which had embraced the group only sporadically over the years for songs like "Closer to the Heart," "Spirit of Radio," "Tom Sawyer" and "Limelight." "We never think about radio or if something is commercially accessible," Lifeson said. The album took Rush's already super-sized ambitions up a notch. I'm really glad that we did it." Rush wound up bringing a nine-piece string section on the road for the Clockwork Angels tour, with Campbell conducting. But it works so well in the record, and it's so dramatic and uplifting. "When we were doing the string sessions for 'The Garden,' I mean, we were all sniffling and in tears," Lifeson recalled. ![]() It was a lot of work, and I think we all made a great effort to make it the best album we could but at the same time we were just having so much fun."Īdding to the bonhomie were string arrangements by David Campbell, who also conducted the section for the recordings. "But it was nice because we could live with for a little bit, and we came in with a different vibe and a different attitude at each stage of the process," he continued. So to break it up like this was something very different and new for us. "Usually when we commit to a record, that's all we're focused on, and we kind of dive into it and. "It was very different for us," Lifeson acknowledged. The initial sessions yielded a pair of songs - "Caravan" and "BU2B" - that Rush released online and played during their Time Machine Tour that began that summer and stretched into 2011, while sessions for the album resumed during the fall and early winter of that year at Toronto's Revolution Recording studio. Rush started recording Clockwork Angels in April 2010 at Blackbird Studios in Nashville, working again with Nick Raskulinecz, who coproduced 2007's Snakes & Arrows. We wanted to make it quite cinematic and get a sense of going to these places and feeling these moods as the journey continues." (Peart replaced original drummer John Rutsey in 1974.) "We understood that it was a story about a journey, and with that singular thought in mind, that's kind of how we approached the music. "We understood what the gist of the story was, and of course, it evolved over a couple of years," said Lifeson, who cofounded Rush with Lee in 1968. The theme was "a young man's quest to follow his dreams" in a world that fought against them, and by January 2010 Peart had sent a batch of lyric ideas to Toronto for his bandmates to start working with. Anderson - the drummer's future collaborator on a Clockwork Angels novel and comic book series. According to Peart, discussions began at a dinner in December 2009, when he presented Lifeson and singer, bassist and keyboardist Geddy Lee the idea for a concept album based on a story he'd worked up with friend and science fiction writer Kevin J. But, he added, "This one is a little more overt, and there's a little more of a story to it and I think it gave Neil an opportunity to express himself on a wider platform."Ĭlockwork Angels was the longest-gestating record Rush ever made. ![]() ![]() Heralding from the mountains of Afghanistan, Afghani genetics have been used to create so many of our favourite indica-dominant hybrids. The White Hot insert makes a familiarly 'clicky' sound at impact which isn’t exactly to my preference to be honest, although it is technology which has stood the test of time and is very popular with lots and lots of golfers. There’s a clear black line on the back of the putter head which is there to aid alignment and, although this didn’t continue right onto the topline (which is my preference) it was still pretty easy to line it up. With a price tag of £239 you’d expect it to feel premium and it doesn’t disappoint in that respect, with the eye-catching red colourway of the Stroke Lab shaft matching well with the writing on the sole and the putter’s headcover. The Double Wide still looks like a blade putter with a nice squat shape and it isn’t too big of a footprint either, so if you’ve been used to an Anser-style for years but are contemplating a little more stability then it shouldn’t be too big of a transition. It’s a clean design with a brushed chrome-look head and white face insert, exactly as you’d picture it in your mind if someone asked you to describe an Odyssey. Odyssey White Hot OG Double Wide Putter Review Looks The putter is also fitted with a new pistol shaped grip in a slight update compared to the original White Hot OG range, where the options were for an oversized grip or a standard thin grip. This latest iteration is said to have added even more stability than in previous years, as the steel section has been shortened and 7 grams of weight have been saved. The putters feature a rich silver PVD finish with fine milling on the surface to give them a premium look, and they are available in either a stepless steel shaft or the newly updated Stroke Lab shaft. In the last few years the brand had tried a number of new inserts including the Microhinge and Microhinge Star but this is the one that golfers asked for. It’s a double bend face-balanced putter which Odyssey says is best suited to golfers who have strokes without much arc or face rotation.Īs the name suggests, the main talking point for this putter range is the return of the White Hot insert, which Odyssey say is the most iconic, most played and most decorated putter insert of all time, with over 20 years of success for both amateurs and professionals alike. The new Odyssey White Hot OG Double Wide Stroke Lab Putter is, first things first, not the catchiest of names, although it does at least give an indication of some of the technology you can expect to see. You get the general look and feel of a blade putter, with a bit more stability in the face and more forgiveness like you’d get with a mallet.
